You are an obsession.

January 23, 2009

I’ve had an exceptionally nasty streak of Dysomnia’s recently, beyond the usual not falling asleep until 3-4am. I blame this week’s Psych lecture on the science of sleep. Aside from providing more opportunities to blog and Twitter (or is it “Tweet”? Dirty Rick Sanchez and Don Lemon say “Tweet”) it has also allowed me to indulge in one of my former favorite activities: listening to Internet Radio. The tech behind the medium has subtlely come a long way since my discovery of it eight years ago. Back when the silence of buffering took more airtime than actual sound, and the stream would light up the front of the DSL modem like the floor in Saturday Night Fever.

My absolute favorite outlet is KCRW. I started listening to this station in 12th grade after reading an article that I think was about Music Supervisors for Film, TV and Advertising. Coinciedentally, it was the same article that made me want to go into advertising. From noon to three every other day, Nic Harcourt’s Morning Becomes Eclectic (aka “one of the most interesting…radio shows in the U.S.” – The Wall Street Journal) kept me company while I worked at my Co-Op job making sense of hours upon hours of raw footage of the raw wilderness and learning the absolute basics of design. Dubbed “the most influental radio station in America” by Details magazine, KCRW is the radio station that introduced Norah Jones, Interpol, David Gray, Dido, Sigur Ros, Coldplay and many other artist to wider North American audiences.
