My absolute favorite outlet is KCRW. I started listening to this station in 12th grade after reading an article that I think was about Music Supervisors for Film, TV and Advertising. Coinciedentally, it was the same article that made me want to go into advertising. From noon to three every other day, Nic Harcourt’s Morning Becomes Eclectic (aka “one of the most interesting…radio shows in the U.S.” – The Wall Street Journal) kept me company while I worked at my Co-Op job making sense of hours upon hours of raw footage of the raw wilderness and learning the absolute basics of design. Dubbed “the most influental radio station in America” by Details magazine, KCRW is the radio station that introduced Norah Jones, Interpol, David Gray, Dido, Sigur Ros, Coldplay and many other artist to wider North American audiences.

As a university student I have to unique privilege of commenting on scenes in both Toronto and the lovably bizarre city of Windsor, Ontario.

As a sometimes resident of an outlying neighborhood in Toronto proper I don’t go to too many shows in Hogtown. While a nod goes to the kitschy nature of The Smiling Buddha, last summer I went to a one off show at the Lucky Dragon in Chinatown. The owners didn’t know what they were getting themselves into but by the end of the night they were having more fun than the 50 some-odd kids jammed in there.

When I’m in Windsor, I thoroughly enjoy going to Phog. They are huge supporters of the local arts scene beyond just music; the visual art community has also benefited from events held there as well. Because of the bands they regularly book and great atmosphere without the plastic people usually found in the Rose City I am proud to endorse Phog Lounge.

We’ve seen it coming for a year now but really, it seems that overnight/all of a sudden politics has become Hollywood sexy.

Eww! Much?

Recently, leading economists said that we in North America have been in a recession for the past year. As a student, I could have told you that. It was damn near impossible to find seasonal work last summer. Also, I have been a regular consumer of  what I call the McDonalds “recession special”: $1 Double Hamburgers. A feat that’s been difficult for the past few weeks due to renovations at the MacDo across the street from the Art School. The management shut down the “lobby”, and thus the only way to get hamburgers has been the drive-thru windows.

A couple weeks ago I spent half-an-hour standing in the drive-thru queue behind a high-school football team to get three hamburgers. Wiser men may have gone home or at least to Harvey’s. But no, I waited in line constantly thinking.

“Welcome the bread lines of the New Economy.”

Rachel Maddow, MSNBC’s new prime time darling and my new news media crush, reports on Sarah Palin’s new gear. Sound superficial? Not when it cost the the RNC $150K. It would have been so much easier if they had picked someone coastal, they already own professional power duds. Palin also reportedly cooked some books in order to bring her kids along (uninvited) on official trips
